Black Sheep Timber Framing is a highly experienced timber framing and carpentry company specialising primarily in green oak framing. We design and build beautiful and purposeful timber buildings, from houses and commercial premises to garden structures and garages and everything in between.

Our bespoke timber frames are made using traditional skills, hand cut mortise and tenon joints pegged with oak pegs. We provide you with a fully designed and engineered frame, erected at your site.

Whilst we build predominantly in oak, we also have extensive experience of building with other timbers such as Douglas Fir, Larch and Chestnut, and of using more contemporary engineered solutions.

Each of our timber frames are marked out and hand cut in our yard in the west country. We only use timber of the highest quality and from a sustainable source. All joints and timbers are positioned and fitted to ensure both elegance and structural integrity.

Our team of expert carpenters take enormous pride in their work, which is reflected in the exceptionally high quality of our buildings. We won a prestigious Wood Award for the best use of British timber for The Pergola at the Collector Earls Garden in Arundle Castle. We have also had our frames featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs. Our carpenters have built and erected traditional green oak frames in Japan, USA and Europe.

Timber Frame Designers

Our timber frame designers will use your ideas and/or architects drawings and work closely with you and the carpentry team to turn them into the timber frame that will work best for your requirements. Full house frame, extension ,garage, commercial building, garden room or garden structure, putting time and energy into the design and detailing at this stage will make the rest of the build much simpler..

If you don’t have an architect, we can help by giving you details of architects who have experience in designing timber framed buildings.

All our frames are subject to engineering certification. We work closely with structural engineers who are normally brought in at the design phase. If you already have an engineer on board we’ll happily work with them, but please bear in mind that some engineers struggle with proving timber framed buildings without over-engineering the timber sizes.

  • The pergolas are two very impressive structures, dividing the memorial gardens upper and lower levels. A true display of carpentry skill, in years to come this pergola will be covered in hornbeam intended to create a shaded walkway, however the geometry it will cover will not be forgotten in a hurry…..

  • I found working with Justin, Fraser and the rest of the team at Black Sheep to be a real pleasure. The quality of their workmanship was first rate and I feel they offer exceptional value. They stuck rigidly to the original price quoted and were modest in their charges for the inevitable extras which you tend to add as you go along. Not only were they ahead of schedule in producing the frames, but they accommodated with grace when the schedules moved around the requirements of the other trades. I have no hesitation in recommending them and have done so already.
